What's on the wall today?
Where do I begin the story on this one?
A long long time ago I asked my son if he would like a new quilt for his barracks room.
And he was like "Uh I guess."
"Ok...what colors?"
"Dark colors."
And many many moons later, I've only gotten this far. I had this grand idea to make all the stars a different fabric...what a dum dum! Yeah it looks great but its not so fun to work on. To do it this way you have to lay it out on the board first and then pick up the four fabrics surrounding the center of the star, make the star points, put them back, and then take of the next four fabrics. So its a constant back and forth...and it ties up my design wall....grrrrrrrr.
To top it all off, since he's here I decided to dig this out and put it up on the wall to get his opinion. And what does he say? "I thought you were going to make me a Marvin the Martian quilt? What the frick dude?! Somewhere along the way I missed that memo.
Now what do I do? As of right now I have a deadline of January 2012. That is when he returns from his tour in Iraq. Do I make this quilt and tell him to deal with it? Or do I slave away on creating a Marvin quilt?
Sheesh...kids I tell you!

I can only advise on what I'd do....and it is not pretty!! I'd let him think this is the one he was getting and I'd make the Marvin quilt....Kids I tell ya!!
This is a lovely quilt, and I really love the colors...on second thought, maybe finish this one and hang onto it for when he get married....but give him the Marvin one in January...you know you have all the time in the world ;O)
I would say keep making the quilt and maybe you could applique a Marvin the Martian on it somewhere.
Love the colors and the scrappiness of the quilt :)
I'm sorry. I couldn't help it - I busted up laughing out loud. Marvin the Martian for a grown deployed dude???? lololol I like Coloradolady's idea. And this is a super-fantastic quilt. Don't stop making it. Make a silly Marvin one for him to have now, but finish this top and then quilt it later on when he's getting married so it's given to someone who will truly love it and appreciate all the work that went into it.
But it sure is an awesome barracks quilt! Silly young man. ;D
I think since he's in Iraq you should pamper him...I don't know what Marvin the Martian is but maybe that's what would be acceptable to his bros. The star quilt is lovely though. I've made one like that - back and forth to the design wall. It's a pain.
Well....hmmmm...boys! I have two, ages 18 and 9 and I'll tell you, boys just think you can read their minds! LOL! Love the quilt that you have started, I tend to like the darker/warmer fabrics!
Have a wonderful evening!

Could you put Marvin on the back of the quilt?? (I have no idea who/what Marvin is??)but I LOVE LOVE LOVE the star quilt...
P
*giggle* Sorry, I had to let it out! :-)) I have 2 boys too. ;-) Definitely finish this one~ start a hunt for Marvin the Martian fabric, and if you don't find any tell him you are working on it; but at least this one will be finished. Maybe you could find some Marvin sheets for him? ;-)
HMMMM - I love the star quilt so here's my solution. Send it to me and make a Marvin quilt for your brave son. teehee!!!!!
Finish the beautiful quilt you started. You will have plenty of time to whip up a fast version of Marvin.
I don't know what a Marvin the Martian quilt is, but I think that it would be better to make it for him (sometimes in Iraq he surely thinks that times were better when he was a young boy living at home with you). But don't abandon this one, it is too beautiful.
Have a nice day
Such a beautiful quilt, lovely warm colours. I'm sure your son will love it when its finished!
I love your quilt and it does not matter what any of us say...do what's in your heart. Mothers are suckers for their children and in the end we always do what they want because not only does it make them happy, but it makes us happy too. From your son's perspective, I am sure he will love anything you make for him. I am not sure what a Marvin Martian quilt is, but if you think you have time enough to make it by 2012, then why not? This quilt can be made and saved for someone else. Oh my, I did not mean to be so long winded. Hope you find your answer real soon.
I don't suppose you're lucky enough that someone makes Marvin the Martian fabric. Or could you find a T-shirt and use it as the center, then build it up to size with pieced borders?
I think if I ever find my own huge glow in the dark Marvin T-shirt, it might make its way into a quilt for my own boys.
